As a graduate of programs in economics, English, French, and TESOL, I thrive on variety. I love nearly anything to do with language - when I'm not writing or learning about language, you will likely find me curled up with book. My other interests include music - I play classical and bluegrass styles on the violin - and history, which brought me to Carillon Historical Park in Dayton, Ohio, an outdoor living history museum where I regularly led historical demonstrations for visitors. In addition, I love traveling and exploring new places; most recently, I resided in France, where I worked as a language assistant at a French high school.
Me as a Teacher
I first began teaching at age 13, when I started a violin studio in my home for local students. Since then, I have expanded my scope and experience in teaching, first by leading educational programs at a museum, and then by obtaining a certificate in TESOL. I have continued to work as a violin instructor through fine arts centers and have taken several professional training courses with the Suzuki Association of the Americas music program. In addition, I've worked as a writing coach, providing feedback and instruction on student papers. Finally, last year, I spent 7 months in France as a language assistant, teaching ESL classes on vocabulary, pronunciation, and American culture.
My lessons & teaching style
My teaching style has been greatly influenced by my Suzuki training, a method of instruction geared toward learning a musical instrument but in fact grounded in language acquisition. The Suzuki method encompasses many ideas, but the most universal of those ideas are: 1) the belief that every individual is capable of learning a particular subject, 2) the knowledge that every individual learns differently, and through different means, 3) the importance of a positive environment in encouraging learning, and 4) the efficacy of specific feedback to promote learning. As a teacher, I keep these tenets in mind in all stages of the lesson, from planning to execution to reflection.
