When do I use ''sự'' ?

Actually, "sự" has nothing to do with "the". "Rich" (giàu) and "poor" (nghèo) are not nouns but adjectives in English. "The rich" and "the poor" mean "people who are rich/poor" while "sự giàu có" and "sự nghèo nàn" mean "richness" and "poorness", respectively. So, as you can see, "sự" is a nominalizer while "the" is an article, adding "sự" before a part of speech will form a noun. The most popular nominalizers in Vietnamese are "sự" and "việc" (their usages are a little different), and we have the word "sự việc" too. In other cases (quân sự, hậu sự,...), "sự" is an unseperated part of the word (not semantically though) so you just have to learn those words.

Thanks for your question. It is really interesting.

The word "sự" does not have meaning when it stands alone. But it is an important word because it makes an adjective become a noun when it stands in front of an adjective

Ex:

Sạch sẽ, trong sạch: clean ==> Sự sạch sẽ, sự trong sạch: cleaness

Giàu có: rich ===> Sự giàu có: richness

Nghèo nàn: poor ===> Sự ngèo nàn: poverty

Thông minh: clever ===> Sự thông minh: cleverness

So, now you may already know how to use the word "sự". Right?

I will give you an example.

Jenny là một cô gái thông minh. Cha mẹ rất vui vì sự thông minh của cô ấy

Jenny is a clever girl. Parents are very happy for her cleverness

Ex:

Sự thật/Thật sự= the truth

Sự giàu có = the rich

Sự nghèo khổ=  the poor

Beside that, "Sự" won't give out any meaning . It's meaning will depend on the word come with Sự

If your mom use :

Tâm sự = (Small talk)mean her own ideas, her problems or her feeling (sad/confuse/worry.. feeling) and hard to share with any body.

Ex: "Tôi có nhiều tâm sự dấu trong lòng"= I don't want any body know what I am thinking

OR " Tôi cần người để tâm sự/ Anh ấy tâm sự với tôi" = I am looking for some one who will listen and care for my feeling or giving me an advise/ He tell me what he think

Thời sự = The news

thời sự đã đưa tin về những người sống sót sau cơn bão = The news wrote about the survises who are alive after the storm

Sinh sự :  Try to make a fight

Anh ta kiếm chuyện sinh sự với những người bạn hàng xóm- He try to make a fight with his neibourghfriends

Cộng sự = Coordinator

Vô tích sự = Useless person

Lý sự =  try using logical idea to win an argument ( about bad though for person who is been mention)

Xử sự = behave

E.x: con cần xử sự cho phải phép - you should behave nicely.
