The teaching of generating mind of altruism is a entrance to the path of Mahayana
The fundamental things to liberate from this suffering are to abandon the ten non-virtuous actions and to practise the ten virtuous actions. Moreover, a mere practise of virtuous actions assists us to rebirth only in fortunate beings, i.e., human, worldly god and demigod but cannot liberate from the root of suffering of cyclic world. Furthermore to liberate completely from the suffering and attain the ultimate happiness or enlightenment, initially we are tend to generate the thought of definite release from cyclic existence wishing freedom from the cycle of unending suffering with Samsara and secondly our mind should be fully endowed with the thought of ultimate altruism like of the Bodhisattva.

The teaching of generating mind of altruism is a entrance to the path of Mahayana
If we don’t take the advantage of having a fully endowed human birth, one day we will pass away (without reaching our full potential). So, after our demise we have to reincarnate in any of six beings in accordance with the our present actions in our previous life. Again taking rebirth in any beings (life form?), we have not any momentary ultimate happiness rather than suffering. So we need to find an approach to liberate self and others beings from the vast ocean of the cyclic world.
