What exactly does "日前" mean?

Today I used the phrase "日前“ with my teacher... I was under the impression that this phrase meant " The other day" or "A few days ago" and in every dictionary or online Chinese website I have found it says that it means this...

My teacher told me today that it doesn't mean that, but it means "Nowadays" exactly like 如今.

I totally believe her, but why does every dictionary and translation site I have found say that the meaning for this is "The other day". eg.. 日前我在商店。(the other day I was at the store)

Does it mean Nowadays, the other day, a few days ago??? I'm confused.

So，日前 means now, nowadays and present in language use nowadays. Bai du proves that most of people use it as those meanings, although the dictionary shows :1.往日;以前。 2.犹目前。 3.几天前。that means 1.before 2. like now, nowadays, present. 3. several days ago, but you can find the examples are ancient Chinese sentences.

My suggestion: Use 日前 as now, nowadays and present . The examples in the dictionary are as following:

1.往日；以前。宋朱熹《答吕子约书》之三二：“年来觉得日前为学不得要领，自做身主不起，反为文字夺却精神。”《醒世恒言·勘皮靴单证二郎神》：“日前不作亏心事，半夜敲门不吃惊。”沈从文《会明》：“住在村落中的乡下人，却早已全数被迫迁往深山中去了。数日来，看看情形不甚紧张，渐渐的，日前迁往深山的乡下人，就有很多悄悄的仍然回到村中看视他们的田园的。”

2.犹目前。《醒世恒言·卖油郎独占花魁》：“做小娘的，正当择人之际，偶然相交个子弟。见他情性温和，家道富足……以此嫁他，图个日前安逸，日后出身。”

3.几天前。鲁迅《书信集·致韦素园》：“日前得来函，在匆忙中，未即复。” 鲁迅《书信集·致许寿裳》：“日前从铭伯先生处得知夫人逝去，大出意外！”
