My favourite Russian city
It is a young city and it was built by Peter I. Many people died during construction because of the weather conditions, swamps. Peter I invited Italian architects and artists to design and to build the city. That's why we have a such beautiful city.Saint-Petersburg like a Venice with canals and with old buildings on the sides of canals.
Unfortunately, during World War II Saint-Petersburg was dramatically destroyed, many people were starving and were dying; thus, it isn't only marvellous city, but city with frightful history.
I have visited many places in Saint-Petersburg such as:
- The Hermitage
- Kazan Cathedral or Kazanskiy Kafedralniy Sobor
- The Field of Mars or Marsovo Polye
And many other places!
The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood impresses everyone. All walls inside the curch are completely covered in detailed mosaics. When the sun is shaining it is awesome! It is important to know that this church was built on the place where Russian Tsar Alexander II had been killed. By the way, Alexander II sighed a document about emancipation of the serfs in 1861, and he is one of the key figures in Russian history. But he was killed because of his reforms including emancipation of the serfs.
Saint-Petersburg was the capital of Russia since 1712 to 1918, from Peter I untill the Great October Socialist Revolution. Saint-Petersburg had also names Petrograd (Peter's city) and Leningrad (Lenin's city).
It is easier to study Russian history in Saint-Petersburg, for each building has a great history. Many outstanding writers was born and lived there, especially from Russian gold and silver century of literature, for instance, Pushkin, Dostoevskiy and Merezhkovsky, Gippius respectively.
I strongly recommend you to visit Saint-Petersburg!
