When to use '的'?

I don't quite understand when to use '的' and when not to. I understand that i的 is the possessive article but its use doesn't seem consistent. Like Pimsleur says that '你家里有几个人?' means something like 'How many people are in your family?', but I don't understand why it isn't '你的家里有几个人?''.
