I'm Going to Aloe Vera Garden Tomarrow. Why do People Believe that the Number 13 is Unlucky? I think the number 13 is considered unlucky and ominous in most countries. In Iran this number is considered unlucky as well. Therefore, all Iranians leave their homes on the 13th of Farvardin (the first month of Iranian calendar) to get rid of 13th. This is called Sizdah Bedar (Sizdah in Farsi means 13 and Bedar means get rid of). On this special day people have an outdoor picnic with their family and friends. They joyfully spend a day outdoor in the countryside, gardens, parks, mountains, and forests and enjoy the wonders of spring. Since thirteen is an unlucky number, leaving home on the thirteen day of the New Year is the way to ward off any bad luck in the coming year as well as finishing off the festivities of the New Year in a pleasant way and in the company of friends and family. Sizdah Bedar is a day to celebrate people’s friendship with nature and it shows that the Iranians have attached to and have been fond of the natural beauties as well. It also marks the end of Nowruz holidays. On Sizdah Bedar, many major cities look empty and unpopulated. Cities and villages turn into ghost towns with almost all the inhabitants gone to enjoy the day in woods and mountains along stream and riversides. The tradition associated with this ceremony is that families throw away the green sprouts which is grown for their Haft-sin table at the end of their picnic. They take the Sabzeh (wheat, barley or lentil sprouts growing in a dish) from their Haft-sin table and throw it into running water before the green sprouts turn into yellow to exorcise the demons from the household. When families throw the green sprouts into a river, a stream or anywhere where water flows, the sickness, pain, and hardship the family may face in the upcoming year would be taken by water. One of the popular traditions of Sizdah Bedar is the knotting of blades of grass by the young unmarried girls in the hope to marry soon and expressing their wish and hope for good fortune in life and love. Apart from unmarried girls, each person who has a wish ties the grass to reach their dreams as well. I am going to Aloe vera garden with my in-laws for Sizdah Bedar. I am sure I'll have a fabulous time with my family and in-laws family tomorrow. I'm looking forward to having fun. :D This is the last day of Nowruz holidays, and I have to start my IELTS prep again after a long break the day after tomorrow. Do you believe thirteen is an unlucky number? What do you think or know about this unlucky number?

Thanks Gillian for your comment. You always give me encouragement with your words. Introducing my traditions to other people is the only thing I can do. I'm so happy to share them with others all around the world. Thanks Gillian for encouraging me. That gives me a lot of energy. ^_^

Sarah, thank you for continuing to share your traditions and information about your native country. I don't know about anyone else but I am really enjoying your posts, you are teaching us all about what Iran has to offer. That aside, your English level has really begun to reach the peak. Well done!
