いぬ/イヌ/犬, inu, dog
こいぬ/子犬, koinu, doggy ”子(ko)” means "child/little". We also write "小犬(koinu)", it's means "small dog".
ねこ/ネコ/猫, neko, cat
こねこ/子猫, koneko, kitty "小猫” means "small cat", not "kitty".
うさぎ/ウサギ/兎, usagi, rabbit We call hare "nousagi (野兎)".
こうさぎ/子兎, kousagi, baby/child rabbit "小兎" means "small rabbit".
かめ/カメ/亀, kame, terrapins Most of turtles as a pet are tiny or small. They're different from sea turtles. They're terrapins (tortoises in American English). We call turtles "ウミガメ(海亀)", tortoises "りくがめ(陸亀)”, terrapins "淡水(tansui)亀".
こがめ/子亀, kogame, baby/child kogame Most of "kame" as a pet are "小亀".
ハムスター, hamusta-, hamster
りす/リス/栗鼠, risu, chipmunk Most of them as a pet are chipmunks, not squirrels. We call both of "chipmunk" and "squirrel" "リス" in general. "Chipmunk" is called "shimarisu".
こりす/子栗鼠, korisu, baby/child chipmunk
かいすいぎょ/海水魚 kaisuigyo, saltwater fish
たんすい/淡水魚 tansuigyo, freshwater fish
こい/コイ/鯉, carp We decorate "Koinobori" at next to our houses for each one's son(s) on May 5th. The design is from "carp".
