Exercise: What If You Were a Celebrity ...

QUESTION:

Many newspapers and magazines feature stories about the private lives of famous people. We know what they eat, where they buy their clothes and who they love. We also often see pictures of them in private situations.

Is it appropriate for a magazine or newspaper to give this kind of private information about people?

ANSWER:

Traditional media such as magazines and newspapers have always been playing a significant role in providing various kinds of information for people of different interests. Some magazines and newspapers have achieved great success in reporting the private lives of celebrities. I personally think this can also be arguably appropriate.

Some people argue that celebrities have their privacies, which is a basic human right of all. They blame some tabloids for using dirty tricks to investigate into celebrities’ private lives that these famous people are unwilling to share. Some of them criticize some reporters for asking too intrusive questions. Though these are factual, it does not mean celebrities’ lives cannot be reported. They only convince me that certain ways of reporting private lives of the celebrities are embarrassing, immoral or even illegal.

To me, out-going celebrities who share their genuine likes and dislikes, and opinions help people, especially their fans to understand them better. This consequently helps to promote their popularities because the general public always tend to prefer celebrities that have warm and frank personalities, whose images are vivid. At the same time, fans and other people can learn from their success stories and positive psychologies, and be inspired for their own pursuit. Moreover, their endorsements of certain brands and products can serve as valuable commercial opportunities. These result in an increase in sell revenue as well as job opportunities in both the production and advertisement industries.

In conclusion, I believe that such reports on magazines and newspapers have many and various benefits. It alone is neither appropriate nor inappropriate. It is up to the reporters to conduct the reporting appropriately.

    Notes:

Celebrities are not necessarily famous. They could be just well known. Fame is usually reserved for people who do great acts of physical or moral courage or are great leaders. Say Joan D'Arc,  Winston Churchill. Celebrities can just be someone photographed often, and they need to work on self-presentation to achieve that. So some ego is involved and that is not typically an aspect of fame. So I have crossed out the word famous in this construction - into celebrities’ private lives that these famous people.

I would use endorsement instead of the plural endorsement. This is the usual construction. The celebrity is paid to present a series of advertisements or appearances, the total is the endorsement.

    ANSWER:

Traditional media, such as magazines and newspapers, have always played (been playing) a significant role in publishing personal information of famous people (providing various kinds of information for people of different interests). Indeed, some magazines and newspapers have achieved great success on the back of (in) reporting on the private lives of celebrities. Some people argue that celebrities have their right to privacy (privacies), which is a basic human right (of all). They blame certain tabloid newspapers (some tabloids) for using dirty tricks to unveil aspects of (investigate into) celebrities’ private lives which they (that these famous people) are unwilling to share. Some (of them) are critical (criticize some) of reporters for asking too many intrusive questions. (Though) When (these are) purely factual, it is acceptable reporting (does not mean celebrities’ lives cannot be reported). However, I am convinced (They only convince me) that certain ways of reporting private lives of (the) celebrities are embarrassing, immoral or even illegal.

To my mind (me), outgoing celebrities who share their genuine likes, (and) dislikes, and opinions, help people, especially their fans, to understand them better. This, in turn (consequently) helps to promote their popularity (popularities) because the general public will always tend to prefer celebrities who (that) have warm and frank personalities and whose images are vivid. As a (These) result, there is potential for (in) an increase in sales (sell) revenue, as well as job opportunities, in both the production and advertisement industries.

In conclusion, I believe that such reports within (on) magazines and newspapers have many and varied (various) benefits. Reporting (It) alone is neither appropriate nor inappropriate. It is up to the reporters to conduct the reporting appropriately.

Very good, professionally written and well thought-out article. I have just suggested a few amendments to make it flow better.
