Blue is the Warmest Color (La Vie d'Adèle) AKA one of the very few contemporary French films that didn't make me feel completely ashamed of being (half) French. As a matter of fact, I loved it. If you're learning French and already have a B2 level or higher, I greatly recommend you watch it. I'd say it's primarily a coming of age movie, beautifully filmed and acted out. Yes, it's also a love story between two girls and yes, there is quite a lot of girl on girl action, but it's a lot more than that. I mean, I'm not a lesbian and I found it extremely relatable. And it just felt so real. I don't know, I guess you just have to watch it (unless you're some kind of religious bigot - I know they're a fairly common species on italki.) Well anyway, the trailer doesn't do it justice but I'll post a link anyway in case anyone's interested. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xcqk_h83iwE

This one of the first French films I saw during my self-prescribed long distance immersion program. I was not expecting certain scenes to be so graphic (and lengthy) but I won't complain. I found the character development and acting superb. The story line was easy to follow, despite watching it in French without subtitles I was able to follow along. I am curious why more French films do not get much attention here in the states.

I watched this film over and over and over again because it's a real masterpiece, it's all about details and each time it made me feel like a peeping Tom. However I never managed to understand fully why despite being so open-minded and progressive Emma wasn't able to forgive Adele for her cheating)

As a French film the "action" was not to be unexpected. I don't think it detracted from the story too much, yet, I would rate it much higher if it had of perhaps excluded a few of the NUMEROUS sex scenes. However, all in all it was a fantastic coming-of-age story.
