To answer your question, in the U.S. I would say say, "Excuse me. Can you tell me where the post office is?" If someone I didn't know approached me saying, "Hello", I would immediately think he was trying to sell me something. If he asked me to "show him the way" it would sound like he wanted me to accompany him to the spot. I like your question because it does point to regional differences in customs.
