The context is, "John" (not his true screen name) is an active member of a japanese learning site that I also belongs to. However he only uses Romaji and tend to write an entire composition in Romaji. Below is what I'm trying to say in English.
I have a question directed to John. Why is it that you always use Romaji? Would it be okay if you try to use Kanji and Hiragana? It seems to me that you are very good at Japanese, why then, only uses nothing but Romaji? ROmaji is not japanese, it is only a notation for beginners, anyone serious about learning japanese will have to learn Kana and Kanji. When using romaji to write long sentences, it can be hard to understand. SInce you are not a beginner anymore, from now on, please use Kanji and Kana.
Is that pretty rude to say? I want to say what I feel in the nicest way possible, but my japanese is still bad. I didn't want to be mean or condescending, but seriously he asks advance grammar questions all the time (always in ROmaji) and it is so hard to understand. Most of the time I have to skip his comments, because seriously I can't read it. Is it my problem only? or you guys also find reading Romaji a pain in the butt? It may be okay for a short sentence or something, but a whole dissertation all in in ROmaji???!! Do you think its a good idea to use Romaji to learn japanese? I self-studied with Genki and they didn't use Romaji at all (well may be only the first 2 chapters until they introduced hiragana and katakana) but other books such as japanese for busy people I heard is all in Romaji. What is your opinion? please leave me a comment!!
