The Lawn My friend sent me a picture of Bryant Park winter scene, where a skating rink was set up above the lawn, with people skating on it and trees covered in snow.I could remember how it was like in summer--lush lawn on which people could have a picnic--but not in winter, since I only spent the summer there. I never thought that the lawn would be changed into a skating rink. In China, my homeland, I think, it is less likely to happen since the government won't bear to spend a fortune on restoring the lawn, for the time being. It is often the case that a warning of "don't step on the lawn" will usually be set up in front of it.So when I was in the States, I was always amazed at how generous the US government. However, I understand that the government policies are largely based on the average education level of its citizens. Without a warning of "don't step on the lawn" or the warnings alike, the parks, the lawns, the community environment may be quickly damaged due to the fraction of people still lacking enough self-discipline. Nevertheless, education will ultimately make a difference, slowly but radically. Human behaviour has a "spillover effect" as people in the community need to interact with each other. With more and more people educated and the compulsory education reaching more citizens and the generations, self-discipline will be established, naturally. I suddenly recalled what Confucius advocated:"Emulate those better than oneself, make introspection when you see a worse person." That a higher level of building a civilized and harmonious society. It requires establishing positive values and instilling initiative and drive instead of relying simply on passive spillovers. ========== Questions: *Can I write "fundamentally" replacing "radically" here? I want to say education could make a difference rather than simply scratch the surface. **Is there a better way to express this : "the government policies are largely based on the average education level of its citizens." I tried to refine the wording, but I failed...>.< ***Is "make introspection" a right expression? I see people using "introspection" but don't know what is the right matched verb for it. Thank you very much!
