...what do you think about sworn virgins? Hi guys, I'm writing my thesis on a particular phenomenon which is widely spread on the Balkans and also on other countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan with main focus of Albania. It is about women who are forced, for one reason or another, to dress, talk, behave and live as a man, rejecting their femininity and promising to remain virgins for their entire lives. Do you think it is right to reject one's being to acquire the rights that are denied to you ,in this case, inasmuch woman? What do you think about this?

Forced Virginity

Hi guys, I'm writing my thesis on a widespread phenomenon in the Balkans, Pakistan and Afghanistan, with a main focus on Albania.  It is about women who are forced, for one reason or another, to dress, talk, behave and live as a man, rejecting their femininity and promising to remain virgins for their entire lives.
Do you think it is right to reject part of one's identity, in order to acquire the rights that would be denied to you just because you are a woman?

What do you think?

Ok this phenomenon happen when a woman doesnt merry with the man that her family have chosen for her. In this moment when she refuse, she accept to be a virgin for whole entire life, so her behave should be like a man, dress like, and if she broke this promise, and she dates with another guy she must burn in fire.

Hello Francesca, I first being Albanian myself heard about this phenomenon through the internet, youtube video by journeyman pictures. It is isolated in the mountains of the north, where people have lived in isolation for centuries due to it's geographical position. That a woman wants to remain a virgin, it's her choice, dressing up and talking like a man, I don't like it at all. I don't think they are forced (forces as by violence or anything) It is more like a question of family honour there. In the Northern Apls also the phenomenon of blood revenge is still quite common. So I am guessing it is to keep the family honour. My guess is also that a woman who does that gains some sort of respect for being brave enough or tough enough to renounce her desires as a woman and look after her family as a man. Is it also spread in Pakistan or Afghanistan? I am sure if it is so, it must be in some mountaneous region there too. Do they just swear to remain virgins of the rest of their life or do they also dress like men? I think that is peculiar to here.
