The Dichotomy between what is Objective and Subjective Objective and Subjective Thinking and writing are concerned with finding truth. One of the assumptions of this search for truth is that you are more likely to find it if your search is objective and not subjective. "Subjective" refers to "feelings" about something. "Objective" means that you are not basing your thinking on the way you feel but on evidence. For example, a claim that you "like" or "love" something is not an objective knowledge, but a subjective opinion. Objective versus Subjective If you view something Objectively, you view it from an outside perspective without bias. An objective analysis is one that is not based on your own opinions, beliefs or motivations. Subjective means an assessment is altered by your own opinions or biases. The validity of concepts, ideas and information is often judged by its classification. Ideas are either Objective or Subjective. Any attempt to understand these conceptions, requires a definition of these terms. Webster’s New World Collegiate Dictionary provides some interesting insights into the vast diversity of what our language has come to signify by these terms. Subjective: relating to or determined by the mind as the subject of experience; characteristic of or belonging to reality as perceived rather than as independent of mind; phenomenal; arising out of or identified by means of one’s awareness. Objective: existing independent of mind; belonging to the sensible world and being observable or verifiable especially by scientific methods; expressing or involving the use of facts; derived from sense perception. Objective information reviews many points of view [Greek EPISTEME / Fact]. It is intended to be unbiased. News reporters are supposed to be objective and report the facts of an event. Encyclopedias and other reference materials provide Objective information. Subjective information is one person's opinion [Greek DOXA / opinion]. ==================================== The definition of "objective" is "having actual existence or reality." In medicine, objective labels such as cancer, brain damage, dietary deficiencies, and sleep disorders can be verified in the laboratory. The definition of "subjective" is "proceeding from or taking place in a person's mind rather than the external world".
