Jokowi is really "bucking the trend" by being the first politician-cum(potential) president to have never been a member of the elite. He would also be the first democratically elected President without a Military background. There's an interesting interview from 1994 with now ex SBY Defence Minister Juwono Sudarsono who said "An Indonesian President has to be Javanese, Muslim and from the Military." For the first ten years of Indonesian direct-elect democracy he was correct, will that trend continue?

Gotta hand it to him for having excellent oratorial skills, but the whole 'I appeal to the masses'/'I'm a man of the people' is an absolute joke. Watching his videos and waiting for his eventual outburst has become a guilty pleasure of mine lol. My theory is that it doesn't matter who wins, ultimately.. as Indonesia's glaringly obvious social-stratification/limited opportunity for social mobility will remain. The conspiracy nut in me thinks that there's a reason why the western media has been vociferously anti-Prabowo (especially when our Order Baru dictatorship was backed by foreign powers). Jokowi is impressive but was groomed and backed by questionable people. It remains to be seen how much influence and autonomy the latter will have once elected. I have a feeling that he will essentially be at behest of his advisors, backers and kowtow to multinationals/investors. Let's hope for the best!
