Translating the news (English to Chinese)

I don't often try to translate news reports into Chinese, but I thought I should start to do so more.I want to try and get as close to the original English as much as possible, but found this very hard as many of the English sentences are so long. I felt I had no choice but to shorten them and translate them as more smaller sentences to carry the same feelings and details over into Chinese.
More experienced translators, I would really appreciate your feedback on the best way to handle translating very long sentences. Thank you.

My translation:

The weather in the UK is turning distinctly tropical with the hottest day of the year marred by torrential rain and major disruptions across parts of the transport network following a spectacular lightning storm last night.
