IELTS writing task 2 answer (3) (international tourism creates tension rather than understanding?) Question: Some people think that international tourism creates tension rather than understanding between people from different countries. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Answer: The contemporary era is thought to be an age of mass tourism. While I agree that it can sometimes generate repulsion between two cultures, I also believe that in most cases it can deepen the understanding between two nations. It is true that some behaviours of the visitors may cause conflicts. Apparently, some of the tourists do not bother to search for information about the cultures of their destinations before they start off, so they might display some impolite or even offensive behaviour, which can lead to local people’s unhappiness or even hostility. For example, from time to time, visitors enter sacred land without permission, which constitutes an insult to local people. On the other hand, tourists is mostly welcomed an understood because they bring a positive impact on local people’s living standards. The development of tourism stimulates economic growth by generating enormous employment opportunities and increasing foreign exchange earnings. These lead to an increase in average household income. This is particularly valuable and appreciated by those impoverished countries, whose citizens are jobless, malnourished and ill-housed. In addition, most of the time travelling actually brings the visitors to a mutual understanding with the natives. Being able to communicate and interact with people from other cultures enables people to gain a direct idea about how things are operated in other parts of the world, as a result it is easier to gain a brand new perspective of the world. People will thus learn to be more tolerate towards foreign values. In conclusion, it seems to me that some misunderstanding may be indeed engendered by tourism, but I would argue that mostly people grow more open and tolerant towards other cultures because of tourism.

Answer:

The contemporary era is thought to be an age of mass tourism.
