IELTS writing task 2 answer (13) (should zoos exist?) Questions: "Some people think zoos are cruel and all the zoos should be closed. However, some people think zoos are useful to protect the rare animals. Discuss both these views and give your opinion." Answer: There has been mounting controversy about the purposes of zoos over the past few decade. Although I acknowledge that to some extent it is unethical to keep wild animals in limited spaces, I would argue that without zoos, wildlife conservation would be difficult to realise. It is true that keeping zoo animals in artificial environments, especially cages with small room, can be negative to them in many ways. They cannot walk around freely, and they lose the freedom to hunt for food, which was the instinct of their ancestors. Without enough physical exercises, they tend to grow overweight or even fall in extreme depression due to dullness of their lives. This kind of treatment is argued to be fairly cruel. On the other hand, it is undeniable that zoos have been playing an important role in wildlife preservation. Since a large part of wildlifes’ natural habitats has been inevitably taken over for human use in order to satisfy the needs of world’s exploding population, many species are driven to be endangered. Zoos provide them with places to survive and reproduce. It is particularly the case for animals that are obsoleted by nature such as pandas. In addition, zoos allow scientists to study animals, their physiological properties in particular, so as to maintain biodiversity. It is not practical to conduct all the experiments in wildlife, which is dangerous to the scientists and difficult to implement. However, these activities can be conveniently carried out in zoos, where scientists can study animals’ behaviour and extract DNA samples to form a gene library in order to preserve biological diversity in the long run. In conclusion, I do accept that in some degree some treatments towards zoo animals are immoral. However, zoos are necessary organisations to keep wild animals from dying out.

"Some people think zoos are cruel and all the zoos should be closed. However, some people think zoos are useful to protect the rare animals. Discuss both these views and give your opinion."

Answer:

There has been mounting controversy about the purposes of zoos over the past few decade. Although I acknowledge that to some extent it is unethical to keep wild animals in limited spaces, I would argue that without zoos, wildlife conservation would be difficult to realise.

It is true that keeping zoo animals in artificial environments, especially cages with small room very little space, can be negative to them in many ways. They cannot walk around freely, and they lose the freedom to hunt for food, which was the instinct of their ancestors. Without enough physical exercises, they tend to grow overweight or even fall into extreme depression due to the dullness of their lives. This kind of treatment is argued to be fairly cruel.

On the other hand, it is undeniable that zoos have been playing an important role in wildlife preservation. Since a large part of wildlifes’ number of natural habitats have been inevitably been taken over for human use in order to satisfy the needs of world’s exploding population, many species are driven to be becoming endangered. Zoos provide them with places to survive and reproduce. It is particularly the case for animals that are obsoleted by nature, such as pandas.

In addition, zoos allow scientists to study animals, their physiological properties in particular, so as to maintain biodiversity. It is not practical to conduct all the experiments in wildlife the wild, which is can be dangerous to the scientists and difficult to implement. However, t These activities can be conveniently carried out in zoos, where scientists can are able to study the animalsbehaviour and extract DNA samples to form a gene library in order to preserve biological diversity in the long run.

In conclusion, I do accept that in some degree some treatments towards zoo animals are immoral. However, zoos are necessary organisations to keep wild animals from dying out.
