8/1/2014 Learning and mastering a language isn’t an easy task. Each language has its own unique set of rules, collectively known as grammar. A lot of languages in the world are dying. An article from BBC pointed out that after 2100, almost 90% of the world language would have ceased to exist. A lot of these endangered languages are spoken by a small number of elderly speakers. After these native speakers pass away, these languages would be extinguished. These diminishing languages are mainly the language spoken by tribes or some dialets. The main reason for these groups of people to give up their languages are because they thought that learning a more widely used language would give their children a better future. Languages should be preserved or protected. In actual fact, preserving language is easier said than done. Languages should be properly documented and this takes a lot of efforts. Can you imagine yourself losing your mother tongue? A language allows people to understand their community, their daily life, their beliefs and their roots. Diminishing languages represents a culture loss. Let’s imagine, if one day, you realized that you were the only one in the world who could speak your own language, how would you feel? Would you feel lonely? I pictured that whenever I had the urge to speak in that language to someone, I would speak to myself or speak to walls, how about you? I am sure it was a helpless feeling.
