New Words Four

repulse
Our army decided to repulse the attack.
She felt heartbroken because her proposal was repulsed. (same as "reject"?)

[repulse is quite a bit strponger than reject in this instance. rejecting a proposal is merely turning it down. repulsing it implies actively doing something to fend it off, like the girl was wacko.]
I am so repulsed by his irresponsible personality. [see repulsive]

veracious
A veracious manner will not always be appreciated; one needs to learn to tell white lies sometimes.

rancor
Rancor was fostered during his abuse and violence with his wife, which led to his death.
What led to his death was the rancor fostered during his abuse and violence with his wife.
(Which sounds better?)

[Neither. Both are pretty awkward.

The rancor growing in his wife, nourished by years of abuse and violence, ultimately led to his death.

Spanish: rencor. Ve a yukou y busca "Gloria Trevi Que Emane" para ver un video que trata de este asunto.]

admonish
My mother always admonished me for making my room in a mess. [or leaving my room in a mess.]

assiduous
I should have been more assiduous in the research. However, the fact was that I didn't want to work as a researcher or a scholar, which made me less motivated.

avocation
I wanted to be an office lady, and an interpreter by avocation. [OK but awkward. Avocation implies passion. Because of my avocation for languages I was able to become an English interpreter.]

preposterous
I appreciated people thinking out of the box. However, his suggestion was whimsical -- a kick in the gallop. [I don't know what the expression kick in the gallop means.] Utterly preposterous!

privation
The rationing and privation in China in the 1960s is hard for today's youngsters to imagine. Life has completely changed!
OR:The rationing and privation in China in the 1960s is beyond the imagination of today's youngsters.
(Which sounds better? The second one, as originally written.)

apprise
What leads to corruption, in my mind, is the lack of proper supervision which results from and the meager transparency in government, i.e., the public are not apprised of what happened.
