Festival Today in my native country Hindus celebrate festival, called nagapanachami. On the day of festival many people go to snakes nest bathe snakes with milk and offer sweets.nagapanchami falls on the fifth day moonlit fortnight of shravan month. These days finding snake nest has become difficult so, people are offering milk for silver nagas(snake) or mud nagas or at last they draw naga or snake picture on wall and worship. There are many mythological stories related to this festival. It is belived that by worshiping nagas we are ensuring that we are protectied us by nagas. In hindu purans it is written that king janamejaya son of king parikshit performed scarifical fire pit, called as yagna since snake named taksha had bitten and killed the king parikshit. In order to take revange over the death of his father king janamejaya performed the yagna with brahim saints.the yagna was so poweful which made all the sankes to enter into scarifical fire pit but snake takshak escaped to the nether world of indra and was seeing help of indra, but the sages increased the tempo of recitng the mantra which made the snake tashak along with indra dragged into the yagna. All gods were scared of the crisis and intervened god manasdevi to stop the sarpa satra yagna. Finally yagna was stopped by janamejaya and this happened to be the day nagapanchami is celebrated. In India most of the temple have snake's idol.
