* Reading Shakespeare's plays in English is hard mainly because they were written in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries and the language is archaic. For instance, "wherefore" means "why", not "where", so when Juliet asks "Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?" she is asking why he had to be born a Montague, why the love of her life is also a mortal enemy of her family.

Because the translations, in general, don't use such old-fashioned language, you have the situation where a bilingual person might understand the translation <em>better</em> than the original.

The meter, iambic pentameter in general, actually makes it easier to memorize. Shakespeare should be read out loud, and watched. Try reading this <em>en voz alta</em>:

<em>and your secrecy to the King and queene moult no feather.</em>

<em>I have of late, (but wherefore I know not) lost all my mirth, </em>
