How to write direct + indirect object in one sentence in French I am a beginner in French and i don`t really know the word order of french. So please help me. I have problem understanding indirect and direct object in french. For example Which one is correct if I want to say : `I give the milk to Paul` " Je donne le lait pour Paul" or " Je donne le lait à Paul" And if I want to say: `I give the milk to him`, do I say "Je lui donne le lait"? How do I write : `I give it to him`. is it "Je le lui donne" and how with the negation, where do i put le and lui? will it be " Je ne le luis pas donne"? I really glad if you want to help me with this one. Thank you.

The examples you have written are good :

Je le lui donne (here you can remember the following order : first COD, then COI)

Je ne le lui donne pas (so here you can see the negation must stand before the COD-COI group)

The order will be the same in some cases:

Tu lui donnes la montre -> tu la lui donnes (COD-COI)

Il lui dessiner un mouton -> il le lui dessine (COD-COI)

Nous leur expliquons le problème -> nous le leur expliquons (COD-COI)

Vous lui envoyez ce SMS -> vous le lui envoyez (COD-COI)

Ils lui disent cela -> ils le lui disent (COD-COI)

If you're attentive, you can see that I have used the COI "lui" and "leur" each time. Actually this order is correct only with these two words "lui" and "leur". If you make your sentence with words like "me", "te", "nous" and "vous", the right order will be COI-COD.

Examples:

Je vous donne le panier -> je vous le donne (COI-COD)

Tu me prêtes ton stylo -> tu me le prêtes (COI-COD)

Il me dit une bêtise -> il me la dit (COI-COD)

Nous t'écrivons une carte postale -> nous te l'écrivons (COI-COD)

Vous nous apportez une mauvaise nouvelle -> vous nous l'apportez (COI-COD)

Elles te font une blague -> elles te la font (COI-COD)

For the negations, no problem. "Ne" stands always before the COI-COD group.

Tu ne me prêtes pas ton stylo -> tu ne me le prêtes pas

Hope I've been clear

How to write direct + indirect object in one sentence in French

I am a beginner in French and i don`t really know the word order of french. So please help me.
I have problem understanding indirect and direct object in french.

For example
Which one is correct if I want to say : `I give the milk to Paul` " Je donne le lait pour Paul" or " Je donne le lait à Paul"
And if I want to say: `I give the milk to him`, do I say "Je lui donne le lait"?

How do I write : `I give it to him`. is it "Je le lui donne"
and how with the negation, where do i put le and lui? will it be " Je ne le luis pas donne"?

I really glad if you want to help me with this one.
Thank you.

I am not a native speaker, but I will do my best.

Your first question is easiest. I would say, "Je donne le lait a Paul."

Second one, I think you have right. Je le lui donne.

Third, the "pas" always goes after the verb. "Je ne le luis donne pas."

" Je donne le lait à Paul"
 "Je lui donne le lait"?
 "Je le lui donne"
" Je ne le lui donne pas"?

Hi Hafid!

I hope it helps you.

Ah ! I forgot to say : COD = Complément d'Objet DIRECT

COD = Complément d'Objet DIRECT
