Should English Majors Study Math? Recently, some complains about whether students who major in English should learn math have risen to a heated discussion. Students’ points of views on this issue vary from one to another. In my part, I think our English majors shouldn’t learn math in university. First of all, I think it’s a waste of time for our English majors to deal with those kinds of difficult math questions. We don’t use it a lot both in our studying life or daily life. Secondly, teachers in math classes always teach us something that is very complicated and abstract, so we need to spend most of our time finishing the homework after class. Therefore we can’t focus on our own major. What’s more? The purpose that we study math is just to get good grades in our math exams, rather than to use it help us thinking in a logical way. After we pass the exam we will forget all the things we have learned in the class and won’t use the knowledge anymore. To sum up, I think it isn’t wise for our English majors to learn math in university. We should focus on our own major and try our best to do it well! (This is a small argument I wrote in my writing class and I would really appreciate it if you can help me correct some mistakes in my writing! Many thanks! )

Should English Majors students majoring in English Study Math?

Students’ points of views opinions / perspectives on this issue vary from one to another. In On my part, I think our English majors shouldn’t (have to) learn math in university.

First of all, I think it’s a waste of time for our English majors students to deal with have to learn to solve those kinds of difficult math questions. We don’t use it a lot both in our studying academic life  or and daily life lives.

Secondly, teachers in math classes always tends to teach us something that is very complicated and abstract math(s) (2) knowledge, so we need to spend most a lot of our time finishing the our homework after class. Therefore As a result, we can’t focus on our own major.

What’s more?,(3) The sole purpose that we study math that underlies our math studies  is just to get good grades in our math exams, rather than to use it to help us thinking in a logical way improve our ability to think logically. After we pass the exam, we will forget and cease to use all the things everything we have learned in the class and won’t use the knowledge anymore.

To sum up, I think that it isn’t wise for our English majors students to learn math in university. We should focus on our own major and try our best to do it well excel in it!

1. 我想你想表达的意思是“英语系的同学现在在大学里面非得修数学。他们应不应该一定要修数学呢?" 不好意思,感觉中文写的不太通顺。。。

2. Depends on whether you use American or British English. American is without the s, British is with.

3. 像中文一样,what's more, "再说", "更离谱的是", 不是一个问题, 所以不能加问号。

Hope this helps, good luck ;)

Should English Majors Study Math?

Recently, there have been some complaints about whether students who major in English should learn math or not, and this haves risen to a heated discussion. Students’ points of views on this issue vary from one to another. InFor my part, I think our English majors shouldn’t learn math in university.

First of all, I think it’s a waste of time for our English majorsus(this phrase was already used above, so it's redundant to use it again here) to deal with those kinds of difficult math questions. We don’t use it a lotmuch botheither in our studyingies life or daily life. Secondly, teachers in math classes always teach us something that is very complicated and abstract topics, so we need to spend most of our time finishing the homework after class. Therefore we can’t focus on our own major. What’s more,? Tthe purpose that weof studying math is just to get good grades in our mathon the exams, rather than to use it in helping us thinking in a logically way. After we pass the exam we will forget all the things we have learned in the class and won’t use the knowledge anymoreever again(this sounds better in this context).

To sum up, I think it isn’t wise for our English majors to learn math in university. We should focus on our own major and try our best to do it well!

Overall, really good argument and usage of English. There are a few places where what you wrote isn't 'wrong' per-se, but rather that the corrections I suggested make the sentences sound more natural and fluid. As to the content of the argument, I almost agree wholeheartedly, with one caveat: basic math (logic and reasoning / statistics classes) should be a GE requirement as those should actually help anyone learn how to analyze and process information in a standard, easy-to-comprehend manner regardless of major or discipline. The more difficult math classes, however, should be relegated to the sciences. Good job and good luck with your English studies! ^^

This isn't a correction, just my opinion.

I study in a Chinese university, and while I agree that math should be made optional for non science majors, for English major students, I believe your math classes are easier than the science students? For example, in our university, we split into classes ranging from A - C, where A is the hardest, and C is really simple, which most of the liberal science students can take.

Is it different in your university?
