Hi Mark,

The reality is that Skype is not a social network. Most people who have Skype do not like strangers contacting them. It would be better to exchange a few messages in italki, and then arrange a Skype call.

A lot of English-speaking people on Italki are shy. They are very shy to speak English, and would be extremely shy to speak Mandarin with a native speaker. Other people have had a bad experience when talking with a stranger. If you are finding no success on Skype, try starting with messages on Italki. After a few messages, when you are no longer a stranger, a person may feel comfortable to talk on Skype. 加油!
