The verb "TENER" Hello guyz am kind off confused when to use the verb " tener" in some phases, ex " estoy mal" , "estoy feliz" , "tengo sed" , "tengo hambre". is it possible to say " tengo feliz" or " tengo cansado" ? if no how can i know when to use tengo in phrases like this and when not to use it? . thanks

You can say: tengo sed or estoy sediento, tengo hambre or estoy habriento.

The basic difference is that tener means when you have something, a need but estar indicates a condition.

Ex:

You need to sleep: tienes sueño.

Your current condition: estas soñoliento.

 

It's difficult to explain because the translation to english ia the same for both sentences.

Tengo hambre: I'm hungry.

Estoy hambriento: I'm hungry.

it is the same problem when i have to use verb take, have or to be... You have to memory when you shall use one or other. do you understand me? i have a shower, i take a shower?????

Tener means to have so it's not possible to say "tengo feliz" too. :)
