Thanks Question: Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in workplace. Others believe that the true function of universities should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer. What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university? Answer: Opinions over the main function of universities are different. Some argue that universities are the places where students improve their knowledge based on their desire and interests and for the knowledge per se not for promoting in workplaces or for jobs, others in contrast, believe that universities should provide students so that they garner adequate information and skills towards the needs of the workplaces. In my opinion, although studying for knowledge is one of the purposes of universities, preparing students for their future jobs is the main goal of the studies. Knowledge per se is not practical, but it has to implement in jobs. A good example here is one attending medicine course. The most important issue is to apply the knowledge of medicine on the work in order to be useful. Besides, societies and their economy are important issues. To live better in a good society, jobs have to promote and improve while helping people’s lives to be more convenient. Therefore, the skills and the knowledge are required to reach these goals which obtain in universities. Additionally, growing technology is a vital option for keeping a country up-to-date. To garner new information and knowledge as well as skills related to them, universities are responsible to take place the courses which are useful for improving workplaces. In the other words, universities should provide the knowledge so that be practical and help people to be skillful for their jobs and societies. In short, I think obtaining knowledge in universities without taking into consideration about the use of the fields in jobs is not realistic and people could study books in libraries for getting knowledgeable. Universities are places which help people to be educated about subjects so that could apply their knowledge on workplaces.
