Pixar (Part 2) From the romantic view of leadership, Pixar’s outstanding leaders contribute a great share in Pixar’s success. Steve Jobs successfully applied the freewheeling and creative culture of Apple to Pixar. He also had great business insight. His decision of going public days after the release of Toy Story infused fresh blood to Pixar, and helped Pixar’s growth. Selling Pixar to Disney by Jobs allied Pixar’s previous rival. The founder of Pixar, Edwin E. Catmull, is another excellent leader. He is the father of computer-generated animation, and he always requires the high quality for films even in Pixar’s high growth period. John Lasseter, who is passionate about developing great stories, with his 8-person team never disappoints audience. Outstanding leaders are even more difficult to find; and as the founders of Pixar, there is no reason for them to leave Pixar. Pixar puts a lot emphasis on innovation. Employees even unwilling to “copy” their own ideas. That’s why all Pixar’s films, except Toy Story, has no sequels. However, creation is always difficult and and risky. No doubt, creating a totally new story needs more effort than following the old ones. It also takes the risk that audience don’t like the new story. Even though, Pixar still sticks to its creative tradition. In order to keep the high quality of their films, they can change the story for 30 times; and they are never afraid of starting all over again. That is exactly why the do not release film this year: they re-create The Good Dinosaur! This kind of courage and determination are unbelievable for production-line animation studios.
