Teacher and Learning From Teacher I met a very good English teacher today. He was an Australian who was married to his Japanese wife and currently lives and works in some universities here. I helped the local city government to hold a cultural exchange event for citizens. For weeks we have been having guest-lecturers from various English speaking countries. All he did was basically to talk about his country as is often seen in many cultural exchange programs. What made him very unique was his humor and also his friendliness which gave me some impressions. English teachers could sometimes very stressful since they often get assumed that they are obliged to make students achieve their goals. Students have good and bad times through the course of leaning foreign languages and some or many will remain struggling long to be satisfied with their ability to learn. In fact learning a foreign language just takes time and becomes too stressful. Another obstacle for the teachers is likely that they need to accustomed to a foreign life. Indeed, this does affect the teachers' motivation. Long after living in a foreign country, it is natural to start to experience difficulties to fit in the foreign society. Some overcome and get accustomed to the local life, but the others get discouraged. He was one of successful English-teacher models who enjoy their own life, as far as here in Japan. He seemed to have accomplished what he wanted through his life here: his job, wife, friends, house, and lifestyle. His attitude was admirable to meet new people and students with true cultural exchange spirits; that is, to welcome others with positive and uplifting minds to make things better and to make them REALIZE how fun to learn a foreign language no matter what stage of language study they are at. Honestly, I myself am not sure if I still enjoy learning English like I was beginning, but looking at the smiles of each participants learning from him recurred some old sensation in me;Learning can be enjoyed and TEACHING can make people happy. The other things I was impressed in his lecture were: he wanted to let the participants to know about his country and raise mutual awareness about both cultures. When introducing new information, the referential sources were highly educational and from authoritative organizations and he kindly explained to the class. He was also, notably, an excellent prompter in group discussion time with great humor and good understanding of the local culture and people. Thank you very much

Teacher and Learning From Teacher

I met a very good English teacher today. He was an Australian who was married to his Japanese wife and currently lives and works in some universities here. I helped the local city government to hold a cultural exchange event for citizens. For weeks we have been having guest-lecturers from various English speaking countries. English teachers could sometimes  feel stressed, since they often assume that they are obliged to make students achieve their goals. Students have good and bad times through the course of leaning foreign languages and some or many will remain struggling long before they feel satisfied with their ability to learn. In fact learning a foreign language just takes time and becomes too stressful. Another obstacle for the teachers is frequently that they need to become accustomed to a foreign life.

Honestly, I myself am not sure if I still enjoy learning English like I did at the beginning, but looking at the smiles of each participants learning from him brought back some old sensation in me;Learning can be enjoyed and TEACHING can make people happy. The other things I was impressed in his lecture were: he wanted to let the participants to know about his country and raise mutual awareness about both cultures. When introducing new information, the referential sources were highly educational and from authoritative organizations and he kindly explained to the class.  He was also,I might point out, an excellent prompter in group discussion time with great humor and good understanding of the local culture and people.

Thank you very much

That's great, you were very lucky to have met someone like that.THis also reminds me of my time in China, because the meeting of cultures between the students and myself and my husband prompted many questions on both sides, and was most interesting for all participants.I always feel that good teachers area also learning- it is not the teacher as SOURCE of information and students as receptacle. We can all learn from each other and it should be a true exchange.
