Medical treatments left pensioner homeless In April I went to the local nursing home to visit Mrs. Huang, who was 71 and lived there alone. Staring out of window, she quietly told me her story: 'Two years before I lived alone in my own house. My son went married 16 years ago and was living with his wife in their own apartment. Both of them had stable jobs, so we lived an ordinary life. They even planned to move to a bigger house as they have saved enough money.' 'But one day things changed: My son was diagnosed with leukemia. On hearing the news, I was totally shocked. I just stood there and didnt know what to do. The doctor told us that with proper treatments including chemical therapy and bone marrow transplantation they can probably extend my son's life for up to 10 years. If on the contrary we take no actions, he will suffer great pain and eventually die in 6 months.' 'Cost of these treatments plus other fees sums up to 500,000¥. We didn't have that much money, so I had to sell my house to pay for that. Being told this decision, my son secretly asked me: 'Mom, dont sell your house. There is no meaning doing that, if I can only spend 10 years lying on bed and doing nothing. That doesn't help our family anyway. Actually, it's a waste of money.' 'But I resisted. As a mother, my son is everything for me. 500,000¥ is a large amount of money, but it is worthy, even if it can only prolong his life for 10 years. So I sold my house to pay for his treatments, and chose to live in this nursing home with my pension.' 'Paying for the treatments made me homeless. Now I have no deposit, no house, literally nothing, and Im suffering here. But I'm willing, because I love my son. I'm not living for a long time, but he has 10 years or more.'
