Infinitives and Gerunds

Hi! I don´t know what verbs are followed by the to infinitive or the gerund.

Example: want to write or suggest taking

<em>'Suggest' is problematic - it functions differently from most verbs, and is usually followed by a subject and verb in the subjunctive.  So I suggest avoiding it is best in this example!</em>

<em>Use of gerunds and infinitives is a difficult topic, so it is no wonder you are unclear about it.</em>

<em>http://www.englishpage.com/gerunds/</em>;

<em>Taking listening lessons in English is rewarding.  To learn is the purpose of studying and taking lessons.</em>

<em>The gerund functions as a noun, just as the infinitive does.  In general the gerund is more common and less formal.  </em>

Please help me.

Hi Josefe. Here's a website that might explain it a little bit. http://neomagazine.com.sapo.pt/TheBolingerPrinciple.pdf

This just makes me realise I sometimes know less about how my native language works than the one I am learning!

TYPO sometimes the -ing ending turns the word into a functioning noun so it can be followed by a verb****
