italki Student Activity - My Perfect Wedding
Ever since I first watched the film “Blue Hawaii” when I was a child, starring Elvis Presley and Joan Blackman, I’ve dreamed of that wedding scene. Most of my friends have never seen the film, so I’ve become quite accomplished at describing it.
Chad, an American son of pineapple growers, and Maile, a Hawaiian princess, have a traditional Hawaiian royal wedding. They meet on a small bridge in the garden of a hotel, and as Chad sings to Maile they walk to a barge where his beach friends are playing ukelele guitars. As they step onto the barge, it is rowed to the other side of a small lagoon, and all their friends and family walk along the edge of the lagoon. When they step off the barge they are singing the words “I do love you, with all of my heart”.
It’s a beautiful romantic scene, and how I always pictured my own wedding. My friends say it sounds nice, but really impractical, and they would prefer a white wedding in a church, maybe with a horse and carriage to ride away in; or maybe a wedding at the beach with a big white tent in which to celebrate afterwards.
As an adult I’ve travelled the world and spoken to people about weddings in other cultures, and some of them sound really romantic as well, but I still hope that one day I’ll have my own “Blue Hawaii” wedding. What about you?
Activity:
1) Can you describe a traditional wedding in your society? Is this your dream wedding? Imagine you are getting married to the love of your life and you write a “Dear diary” note (200 words) after the wedding describing how the day went.
2) If you could design your own wedding and ignore all tradition, what would you do? Imagine that you and your partner have decided to have a non-traditional wedding, but now you need to organise the day. Write an essay (200 words) describing everything you need to plan.
