Do you have a lovely pet? In a child's life there is a moment in which he asks for having a pet. He demands usually an specific animal: a dog, a turtle, a cat... This moment arrived in my son's life when he was 11 years old and wanted fishes. I didn't agree with him. The best choice would had been a dog, but neither of us had enough time to walk it and it couldn't be alone all day. Therefore we had to make another choice. With this idea, I brought my son to an animals shop and he fell in love with a white little rabbit, to whom Daniel gave the name of "Maduixeta" (it's the Catalan name for a little strawberry). The aim of having a pet is to teach children what means being responsible of another living being. Assure that the animal has enough water and food, cleaning his cage and being worried for its welfare.

Excellent Lidia!  In our case, although our daughter desperately wanted a dog, we settled for fish for the same reasons you outlined in your post.  Although, in the end, we ended up doing all the work involved in their care (which was minimal).  I think that in most cases, and especially with dogs, the parents end up doing most of the work involved in caring for the pet while the children occasionally give the animal a pat.  Needless to say, we are not getting another animal!
