Do Sports Professionals Earn Too Much? (An IELTS Writing Practice) Successful sports professionals are paid much more money than other professionals. This awkward truth makes some people feel uncomfortable and consider it as unfairness, while other people think it is absolutely justified. In my opinion, it depends on how you define “justness”. First of all, sports games, such as playing basketball and football, are very popular among normal people. It is also an easy relaxing entertaining for watching sports games, at least more relaxing than reading news about important scientific findings or professional financial reports written by accounting exports. People are willing to pay for successful sports professionals, who are also called sport stars. More importantly, sport stars are actually commodities. They sell themselves to the public, the media and the fans. That is the same reason movie stars and music stars are highly paid. From the economic point of view, it is pretty reasonable and justified for sports stars to earn much more money than professionals in other field, as long as it is a free market. However, if you value a person’s contribution by money, it is unfair for sport stars earning more money than other important professionals. It is undeniable that the work of a scientist is way more important than a sport game that a sport professional plays. However, if we view the world in this way, we should agree that successful entrepreneurs who have the ability to create much fortune are the most important people in the world. They are not, obviously. Rewards of people’s work can be divergent. The satisfaction of solving a scientific problem, the respect a professional receives because of his excellent work, and the big reputation and recognition those most talented, important experts earned are all rewards. It is virtually impossible for anyone to think that Einstein, one of the greatest scientists, is less important than Beckham, a famous and successful football player, no matter how more wealthy Beckham is. Besides, too much money can be a curse. We all read news about young sport stars doing drugs. After some sports professionals are retired, they lose their income and end up with a miserable life.
