About Me I am from China, a college student major in English, but my English is poor, especially my oral English. For me, I want to improve my oral English, but I am too shy to open my mouth to talk with my foreign teacher. I'm afraid of being asked question in English, because I always forget the words that I need to use. Everytime I will just stand there and say nothing, I feel very awkward.

Welcome to Italki, Kary.  Here are some ideas for you:

(1) Find a language partner on Italki.  You may find more confidence talking to another language-learner rather than to your teacher.

(2) When you talk with your language partner, use a script.  That way, there is no panic about not understanding words, yet you practice speaking and listening to English.

(3) Write a short essay, and make an oral presentation to your language partner.  Your partner can then ask you questions about the essay.  Because you will be speaking about your essay, there should be few words which you don't know.

(4) Talk about a hobby.  Because it is an area that interests you, your enthusiasm to talk may overcome your shyness.

(5) Use QQ or WeChat to have a "conversation" by sending voice messages.  If there is a word which you don't understand, you will be able to find it in your dictionary.  You can also take your time preparing and practicing your spoken reply.

我祝你好运。

If you can't make yourself talk with someone, then try making recordings of your voice to have others review. You can always use one of the internet sites where the words are pronounced for you, to see if you are close to right.
