What English TV shows or movies do you recommend for English class in high school in China? I‘m teaching English in a high school in China. This is my first year in teaching. Most of my students have very poor foundation ,thus have little interest in English. But they do love watching English movies.I want to make the English class a little bit more interesting by showing them some movies or tv series. But it musn't involve too much violence or sex which is forbiddenin our school. Do you have any recommendation? I'm quite an inexperienced teacher, I'd love to hear your advice on how to teach English in class. Thanks~

I do not think watching movies is a good way to learn a language. Because the actors will either speak too fast or use too much slang. If the movies have subtitles, then the students will spend their time reading Chinese instead of listening to English. I would only show a movie if I knew that my students could understand 60% of the English language.

One of my language exchange partner is also a high school teacher, and I suggested improvisational exercises and games she could use. She told me the other day that her students love the games I suggested and they are so excited to play the games. She even sent me pictures of the students preparing for the games.

I emailed my partner youtube videos of the games so she could see how they should be played.

I will tell you briefly what I suggested. I told her at the start of every semester, interview each students to guage their English level. Identify the top 5 or 6 students whom she feels can speak English to a high degree. Then devide the class into groups and make sure that the students who can speak English the best, are not in the same group. This way, students who don't speak English so well, can learn from the better speaking students.

I also told her that these students should always remain in the same group and they can rely on each other to study and compete with their fellow students.

If you want me to email you the youtube videoes so you can see what I suggested, I can.

Thanks! But we only got 40 minutes for one lesson, do you think it is good for me to divide a movie into several parts?

Hi Anchu,I have a huge list of movies that I have used in class that are really good and are "safe" .For example I love to show "Dead Poets Society" starring the late Robin Williams,it is set in a school so students love it.It is not too long either. Then there is "Shawshank Redemption" and "Forrest Gump" all of those work well in class. Also "Edward Scissorhands" .There are many websites that can also recomment movies that are good in class, including short ones no more than 60 minutes.
