Persona just as a person/individual people.

personaje could be: if you are refering to someone fictional (Character of a book or movie) or if you are refering about someone that is important or stand out between others (personage). hope you understand my english. Regards

what is the difference?

persona ---> It has the same meaning as "person" in english.

personaje---> It´s almost the same meaning as "character" in english. Sometimes it is used in a pejorative way, when you want to say that someone isn´t serious or has a very marked personality that doesn´t seem real.
