“多少” 和 “几” “duō shǎo ” hé “jǐ ” “多少” 和 “几” how many, so many/ how many “duō shǎo ” hé “jǐ ” The two words, as pronouns, are used to ask for numbers, but they differ from each other in the following points: 1."多少duō shǎo" can be used to ask for any number, but generally the numbers over ten. "几jǐ " is usually less than ten, but is not subjected to the restriction when used to ask for ordinal numbers or collocating with words like "楼lóu(floor)", “天 tiān(day)", "年nián(year)" and etc. Eg: ---你家在第几楼? ---3楼。(---Which floor is your home in? ---The third floor.) nǐ jiā zài dì jǐ lóu ? ---3lóu ---你的英语得了多少分?---95分。 (---How many points did you get in your English exam? ---95.) nǐ de yīng yǔ dé le duō shǎo fēn ?---95fēn 。 2. "多少", when used before a noun, can also indicate a large but nor precise number. In this case, the quantifier is usually omitted. "几", when used before a noun, can also mean "some", "a few", but the quantifier can not be omitted in this case. "多少" can also be used before uncountable nouns to indicate an uncertain or indefinite quantity, but "几" can not be used in this way. Eg: 多少东西就这样被偷了!So much was stolen! duō shǎo dōng xī jiù zhè yàng bèi tōu le ! 他学汉语只坚持了几天就放弃了。He insisted on learning Chinese just a few days before he gave up. tā xué hàn yǔ zhī jiān chí le jǐ tiān jiù fàng qì le Now you try!
