Whether we should check every new words while reading an English book Today, I discussed how to read an English book with some friends. Some think if you meet a new word while read, you should check its meaning in a dictionary immediately, others think you don't have to know its exact meaning, and should just ignore that word and continue your reading. At last we come into the opinion that how you deal with a new word depends on the purpose of your reading, if you just read a novel or something, you can ignore the new words at first, but, if that new word comes again or that new word comes frequently, then you should check its meaning, While, if you want to improve your vocabulary when you read an English book, then you should check every new word you meet. I think we had an interesting and helpful discussion today.

Whether we should check every new words while reading an English book

Today, I discussed how to read an English book with some friends. Some think that if you encounter [or come across] a new word while reading, you should check its meaning in a dictionary immediately. Others think that you don't have to know its exact meaning, and should just ignore the word and continue your reading. At last we came to the opinion that how you deal with a new word depends on the purpose of your reading. If you are just reading a novel or something, you can ignore the new words at first, but, if a new word comes up again or that new word occurs [or comes up or appears] frequently, then you should check its meaning. However, if you want to improve your vocabulary when you read an English book, then you should check every new word you come across. I think we had an interesting and helpful discussion today.

Hello. Your English is very good but to improve you could practice more with phrasal verbs and continous tenses. Also, beware of writing very long sentences which don't sound natural in English. I am an experienced, native English-speaking teacher so I would be happy to help you. Please take a look at my teacher profile and send me a message if you would like to book a tutoring session.

Best wishes,

Katherine

hi, charlescuy , thank you for your advice. But just like I worte in the notebook, if you read a novel, and that new word doesn't influnce your understanding about the paragraphy or the sentence, maybe it is ok if you just ignore it. And, if that new word comes across the second time or the third time, and you still couldn't understand its meaning then you should check that word.

I think that you should immediately find the meaning of the new word. One word can change your understanding of previously read items. That one word can also set things in your mind so that your understanding of future items may be influenced.
