Can I also write "That's the beginning of the selection."? Is there any difference in nuance or else between those two sentences?

 

If I asked what had happened at 10:00 you might use the first version, with the addition of the word 'process' after 'selection'.

If you heard the first name being called, you might say the second version, still adding 'process'.
