My best friend, Dianne I once studied in college in Canada a decade ago. I was a mature student who was 27 at that time. I wanted to devote myself helping the poor during the summer vacation. So I applied for an intern to one of Christian ministries in Toronto. When I flew to Toronto, I was frustrated a lot because other interns I had to live with and work with were much younger than me. Those interns were from various countries. I thought I was okay with coping with younger folks, but I was not. They were just too young to hang around with, but of course they were nice. There was one young college Korean-American student as well. However, she hardly spoke Korean and had weird ideas on Korean customs. I tried to help her with healthy perspectives on Korea, but she was just another young American intern. I could overcome a language barrier because I always thought that I was learning English and I was okay with many mistakes. However, I was culturally shocked as I hung around with these young friends. Very hard. I was very close to leaving Toronto for Vancouver. However, I was no longer to be isolated as one angel came to our camp. She was Dianne. She was only three years younger than me unlike other interns who just reached majority. As I shared my frustration, she was a good listener. It was very comforting. I always had expected that I would have had a nice English native friend, but in realty I never imagined that I COULD every possibly make a REAL friend who were a non-Korean. Dianne and I talked constantly, traveled together, had coffee and prayed for one another. I was grateful for her. I still keep in touch with her. It has been twelve years to be friend with her. She is going to get married soon. I wish I was there, but I go to work that I can't be off of for a week. It is a shame. I love you, Dianne. Thanks for your corrections in advance. P.S. I am a serious English learner and Korean coach. If you are interested, I will help you with Korean learning in return for English learning.
