Polar Bear In the Arctic region it’s very cold and it usually snows. There are no trees, and only a few plants grow in the summer. The Arctic region is the habitat for animals such as the polar bears. Polar bears are mammals. Like all mammals, polar bears are warm-blooded animals. Their bodies stay at the same temperature whether the air or water around them is hot or cold. Polar bears have a very thick coat to keep out the freezing cold of the Arctic. In winter, they also shelter in a den, or hole, which they dig in the snow. As well as to keep it warms, a polar bear has a white coat to camouflage it against the snow when it hunts for food. In fact, its whole body is perfect for life in its surroundings. Its large paws are excellent snow-shoes as well as great paddles for swimming. It’s the largest carnivore that lives on land. Seals make up most of a polar bears diet. They use sea ice as a platform to hunt seals. Polar bears have an excellent sense of smell, with the ability to detect seals nearly a 2 km away. Polar bears don’t need to drink. They get all their liquid from the food they eat! Polar bears spend most of their time in the sea. They can swim for 100 km without stopping! Polar bears are amazing and fascinating animals, but they’re endangered. They need sea ice to hunt seals, but the sea ice is melting by the global warming.
