6 Tones in Vietnamese There are six (6) tones in Vietnamese. Level tone = ngang ( no mark) Mid falling tone = huyền ( \) Mid falling tone + short rising tone = hỏi (?) Slight falling tone + long rising tone = ngã (~) High rísing tone = sắc (/) Low falling tone = nặng (.)

Ok, now, I heard two ways with hỏi. I was told that the "hỏi" was mid rising and short falling tone by another Viet person. I was also told that the southern dialect has six tones while the northern dialect has only five dialects.
