An IELTS composition The question is: In most countries, prison is an effective solution for the problem of crimes. Some people think it is a more effective solution to provide a better education. To what extent do you agree or disagree. Here is my composition: Some people believe that imprisonment is more effective than education in terms of solving crime-related problems. I disagree with this view because, from my point of view, they are equally important for building a harmonious society. Indeed, sending criminals to prison is vital for justice. It is no doubt that people are responsible for their behaviors. Once they have done something illegal, they may face charges and be punished. The fear to stay in prison can effectively stop some potential criminals from doing things they would regret for the rest of their lives. In addition, prison provides a good opportunity for criminals to reflect their acts, thus behaving good after the prison terms. The existence of prison is absolutely powerful to punishing and deterring crimes. A better education, on the other hand (in the mean time?), plays an indispensable role in the solution to problem of crime. Firstly, education provides people with knowledge regards of how to distinguish right and wrong, legal or illegal, especially in developing countries. A survey conducted in 2013 revealed that 10% of defendants in criminal courthouses defended that they were not aware what they had done were illegal. If they had had the knowledge, they would have avoided ending up in prison. Secondly, public are educated about the consequences that a crime would cause, thus having fear of being in jail. Without a close-up look of the punishments, some people might think that it is possible to get away with crimes. Therefore, the effect of a better education on crime cannot be ignored. In conclusion, I think prison and a better education are both important and equally effective in solving crimes.
