He tiptoed cross the kitchen and came to the back door, left the house and then latched the door behind him. After that, he walked like a thief to the other side of the garden with great caution, not to leave any foot print on the mud. He soon disappeared in the darkness.

He tiptoed across the kitchen and came to the back door, left the house and then latched/locked the door behind him. After that, he walked cautiously, like a thief, to the other side of the garden with great caution, <em>(just move the caution nearer to the walking)</em> so as not to leave/to avoid leaving any footprint on in the mud. He soon/quickly disappeared into the darkness.
