How important is it to be happy at work? What is more important, Money or satisfaction?

Today I’ll begin by asking "How important is it to be happy at work?” and, in more detail: “What is more important: money or satisfaction?"

After the recession, the number of new graduates looking for money is steadily rising. Happiness at work is taking a secondary role because they have to earn enough money to be independent. As time passes , they will realize that they should have pursued their dreams instead.

Let’s consider how important is it to be happy at work:
• If you work on something you love, you will have a better chance to be good at it. You must also take into account that if you are happy or engaged at work you will be less stressed, less worried and better rested. Employees are, on average, 20% more productive when they are happy at work. Their absenteeism is lower, and their customer engagement is higher
• Disengaged employees are unhappy on Tuesdays whereas engaged employees are consistently happy all week. What’s more, these workers undermine what their engaged co-workers accomplish every day. That’s why large companies personnel departments are looking now for candidates that aim job satisfaction at the position that they are proposed to.

Let me now turn to what is more important, money or satisfaction at work.
• On one hand, if you hate your job eight hours a day, five days a week, then you're going to hate life.
o There have been jobs which some people hated. It didn't matter how much money they made, they hated working there.

o A miserable workplace makes for a miserable existence. Some people dread waking up because they have to go to a job that’s going to make them feel miserable.
• On the other hand, you could end up hating your job if you are underpaid.
o To be underpaid generally means to be undervalued, and if you are undervalued, you may develop low self-esteem, which may lead you to unhappiness and depression.
o You may also be devalued as a result of being underpaid
o You will not be able to plan your life in many important areas; for example, marriage; having children, and planning your career, because of daily financial problems or lack of the time needed to care for your personal life.

We need more than food and a roof over our heads. As human beings we have the necessity of feeling good about our lives, feeling safe, and being able to bring up our children properly.
