Április 17 Köszönöm Tünde, Tamás és Sonia, minden javítás hasznos van! Csak egy gyors kérdés ... (de talán egy nem gyors valasz :) ) When I learned Afrikaans at school, I remember the word order in a sentence was "Tyd, Wyse, Plek", basically Time, Action, Place. And in Past tense, the verb goes to the end of the sentence. In this way, forming sentences was relatively simple. However, it seems that in Hungarian, the sentence word order follows other rules. I get the bringing of the emphasis to the start of the sentence, though generally I am finding it tricky to figure out when a verb comes before/after the subject/object, etc. Tudná segíteni? Köszi!

Csak egy gyors kérdés ... (de talán egy nem gyors válasz :) ) --> I don't really get this one. Did you mean something like "De talán nem kapok rá gyors választ"?

In Hungarian, a word can take almost any position in the sentence, which often determines the meaning.

Megyek az előadásra. - I'm going to the performance.

Elmentem az előadásra. - I went to the performance. (meaning "did go" - we stress that the action took place)

Az előadásra mentem. - I went to the performance. (Not the exhibition.)

Tegnap mentem az előadásra. - I went to the performance yesterday.

Holnap megyünk az előadásra. - We are going to the performance tomorrow.
Megyünk az előadásra? - Are we going to the performance?
Jössz az előadásra? - Are you coming to the performance?
Az előadásra megyünk? - Are we going to the performance? (Or there is a chance we are going somewhere else?)

Az előadáson voltam. - I was at the performance.

Voltam az előadáson. - I was at the performance. (used when you want to say that you were indeed there and didn't do something else instead)

Tegnap voltam az előadáson. - I was at the performance yesterday.

Voltál tegnap az előadáson? - Were you at the performance yesterday? (Or you had something better to do?)

Tegnap voltál az előadáson? - Was it yesterday when you were at the performance?

Tegnap az előadáson voltam. - Yesterday I was at the performance. (And the day before that, I was at the exhibition.)
