If you want to read and write Chinese characters well, then know your radicals first.  Like in English, if you know your root words well, things will become very easy.  Written Chinese is very logical.  For example, combining "female", 女 with "son" 子 means good.  Chinese mentality that sons are better than daughters.  女 ＋ 口 = 如 = if, a woman's words are always iffy.  家 is a roof over a pig.  This means family because without the pig in ancient times, there is no commerce and no money.  Hence how could a family exist.  On the other hand a roof over a woman becomes 安 = peace.  Why shouldn't a man be at peace when the woman does all the housework?  婦 a woman with a broom = housefrau.
