Places and forms of power - Social media influence in our society Part 2 Hi! This is the second part of my text "places and forms of power" for my oral examination. Thanks if you're correcting it :) (See part 1) Part 2 : But why can we consider this presence as a factor of influence? Dr. James Caverlee, a computer scientist, is studying the use of social media to harness collective intelligence to perform tasks, to persuade and change minds, and maybe even to change the world. According to him, these large-scale networked information systems are typically open and intentionally designed to encourage participation. Thus, there is an online crowd of people who take part in the social media life. But the social Web and social media have essentially become weapons of mass persuasion. Indeed we have large numbers of people interacting with each other, so we see not only spam but political campaigns involved in this. (We see evidence of governments and hate groups engaging in this.) Social media not only influence our daily life but also our opinions. When the opinion of billion of people is swayed, it can change a lot of things because, as we know, when a crowd move, it’s impossible to stop it and worse, we’re swept along by it or even swamped by it. A crowd’s movement can cause serious damages. Social media is really powerful. They can influence a crowd of opinions. They can quickly shape the world.

Places and forms of power - Social media influence in our society Part 2

Hi! This is the second part of my text "places and forms of power" for my oral examination. Thanks if you're correcting it :)

(See part 1)

Part 2 :

But why should (depending on context) we consider this presence as a factor of influence? Indeed we have large numbers of people interacting with each other, so we not only see spam but political campaigns involved in this. (We see evidence of governments and hate groups engaging in this.)
Social media not only an influence our daily life but also our opinions. When the opinions of billions of people are swayed, they can change a lot of things because, as we know, when a crowd moves, it’s impossible to stop it and worse, we’re swept along by it or even swamped by it. A crowd’s movement can cause serious damages.

Social media is really powerful. It can influence a crowd of opinions. They ("it" if talking about social media) can quickly shape the world.
